Wheelbases

Wheelbases are the force feedback motor units that drive your steering wheel. Direct drive bases offer the highest fidelity and torque, while belt-driven units provide a more affordable entry point. Compare peak torque, latency, and ecosystem compatibility — each brand uses its own quick release standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a direct drive wheelbase?
A direct drive wheelbase connects the steering wheel directly to the motor without belts or gears, delivering the most precise and powerful force feedback available for sim racing. Direct drive units typically produce 5-32 Nm of torque and are preferred by competitive sim racers for their instant response and realistic road feel.
How much torque do I need for sim racing?
5-8 Nm is sufficient for casual sim racing. 10-15 Nm covers most competitive use cases and provides excellent detail. 20+ Nm is for enthusiasts seeking maximum realism, especially in endurance racing. More torque is not always better — the granularity and quality of the force feedback signal matters more than raw power.
Direct drive vs belt-driven wheelbase: which should I buy?
Belt-driven wheelbases (200-500 EUR) offer good force feedback for beginners and casual racers. Direct drive wheelbases (350-2,500 EUR) provide stronger, more detailed, and faster-responding feedback with no mechanical lag. If your budget allows and your rig can handle the torque, direct drive is the recommended upgrade path.
Can I use any wheel with any wheelbase?
No. Wheels and wheelbases must share a compatible quick release (QR) system. Fanatec wheels only fit Fanatec bases, Simucube uses its own QR, and so on. Some third-party adapters exist but may affect rigidity and signal quality. Always verify QR compatibility before purchasing.
